Make Mine Magenta this Valentine's Day

Published: Chatting Food, January 2023

This year, Pantone’s colour of the year announcement was all about hope. Known as “Viva Magenta” it’s described as “joyous and optimistic”. That seems spot on in light of the challenges we’re all collectively facing in 2023. And from permeating fashion to interiors to hair colour, it’s no wonder, with its vivacious attitude, that this colour is now tipping over into the world of cocktails too.

Think Magenta Sours and Raspberry ‘75s and an endless spectrum of experimentation with this colour in a cocktail glass. If you fancy trying the trend in Surrey, head down to The Botanist in Farnham, which has various colourful options on the menu. The “Mountain Blossom Martini” is a non-alcoholic and deep purplish tipple with sweet strawberry foam. Or pay a visit to The Gin Kitchen in Dorking, which boasts a fantastic selection of cocktails. “For the Train to Wimbledon” is an inviting, deep red Champagne cocktail, ideal for a Valentine’s Day date.

But if you’re planning a romantic dinner at home, then the team at Penrhos Spirits has tapped straight into the trend with a Penrhos Flora Dora. Made with the limited edition Wonky Raspberry flavour for a delightful, colourful hue, this is an easy-to-make but quick-to-impress cocktail for a night in to remember.

Penrhos Flora Dora Ingredients: 50ml Penrhos Wonky Raspberry 1 x Lime 25ml Penrhos Blueberry Liqueur (or alternative fruity liqueur) Ginger Ale Raspberries

Method:

  1. Muddle 5 raspberries in a highball glass. Add 25ml freshly squeezed lime and 50ml Penrhos Wonky Raspberry.

  2. Add 25ml Penrhos Blueberry Liqueur and top with ginger ale.

  3. Garnish with fresh raspberries.

Tip: freeze any leftover raspberries for future cocktails at home. Penrhos Spirits has also released this limited edition flavour in new, 100% recycled aluminium bottles. The spirit itself is made from surplus and wonky raspberries unable to be sold to supermarkets from summer 2022. So if you’re looking for a gift for a climate-conscious partner this is an ideal option for Valentine’s. Available PenrhosSpirits.co.uk RRP £38, limited edition only. Or if you want to keep it classic with some pink on-trend fizz, Pasqua’s aptly-named Romeo & Juliet Prosecco Rosé has an inviting rosy hue, courtesy of the Pinot Noir grapes. Perfect paired with seafood or on its own as a romantic aperitif to start the evening, with notes of raspberries. The Pasqua family’s passion for wine-making is born out of Verona, which the bottle proudly pays tribute to with images of the famous messages of love found in the city at Juliet’s courtyard. Available Majestic.co.uk RRP £12.99.
